Title to

By Stephanie Campos-Watson
The mission
of the Graduate Center Women of Color network is to support women of color
doctoral students through aiding in the completion of their degrees. This group
of determined and committed scholars will aim to equip its members with the
tools to survive and succeed in graduate school through peer mentorship,
special programs, lectures and round table meetings. Mentorship and
collaboration will help members to manage the various identities (daughters,
partners, mothers, workers, etc.) that affect their scholarly goals.
On
September 15th the network held the first installment of its Roundtable Series,
entitled “Informal Discussion with Women of Color PhDs.” The Roundtable Series
will work to bring women of color PhDs to speak about what it means to be a woman
of color inside and outside the academy. The talks will be informal and
followed by a question and answer session. On alternate months we will not have
a speaker, but will come together to bond, give each other support, and just
talk!
Dr. Leith
Mullings of the Anthropology Department generously gave her time to speak to a
group of over twenty women of color at our first meeting. She spoke not only
about her experiences as a graduate student, but answered questions about
balancing family and career, what to expect after the PhD, and much more. We
left the room that evening feeling refreshed, motivated and glad to have met
new friends.
