Student Organizations Hold Fair to Recruit Student Members

A Student contemplates some of the information
provided at the DSC's student organization fair.

By Carolyn Fisher

Some CUNY graduate students may not realize it, but the Graduate Center is home to a vibrant community of student clubs and associations. On Wednesday, February 11, the Doctoral Students Council (DSC) organized a fair off of the GC lobby to showcase some of those clubs and give students a chance to talk to their members.

Ordinarily hidden from student eyes in offices on the labyrinthine fifth floor, the chartered organizations created a number of informative and sometimes beautiful posters advertising their groups. Organizers lured in passing students into the Elebash Recital Hall lobby with offers of free coffee, popcorn and other snacks. Once inside, students could peruse the posters, chat with group representatives, and listen to music.

Lucky passers-by were also treated to live music. The jazz trio Le Splendid Ensemble, featuring musicians Lawrence Goldman and Karl Kramer, provided a perfect backdrop for pursuing both extracurricular and scholastic propaganda. Le Splendid Ensemble is sponsored by the student organization L’Atelier.
Participating in the fair was an assortment of groups representing the diverse interests of the clubs supported by the DSC. Nadira Narine and Tatiana Carayannis were present representing the Africa Research Group, which describes itself as “an interdisciplinary association of graduate students engaged in the study of Africa at The CUNY Graduate Center.” This group organizes a listserv of Africanists at the GC, and organizes lectures, seminars, film screenings and other events.

A number of students were present at the fair to represent the recently-revived student group AELLA (Asociación de Estudiantes Latinos y Latinoamericanos), including Ira Beltran-Garibay, Patricia Ruiz Navarro and Dave Cuthbert. This group describes itself as “a broad based organization of CUNY students interested in Latin America and the Caribbean... AELLA sponsors events throughout the semester including parties, movie nights, talks and workshops. Our membership reflects the many academic interests to be found among students at CUNY. It is open to everyone who shares our interest in Latin America and the Caribbean regardless of their cultural background.”

A wide range of other clubs were also present. Jason Schulman represented the Democratic Socialists of America, Diana Cassells represented the Global Studies Collective, Will Weikart represented the group Free CUNY!, Heather Gautney represented the DSC’s Adjunct Project, and Nelly Saint Maurice represented the group L’Atelier. A representative was present from the International Socialists Organization. There were also posters submitted by the Japan Study Group, the Ethnobiology Study Group, and the Eighteenth Century Group.

All of the clubs present at the fair are chartered by the Doctoral Students’ Council. The DSC charters interdisciplinary groups comprised of at least twenty students from at least three disciplines. A group with a DSC charter is eligible to apply for $250 per semester to support its activities, and after several semesters of being chartered it is eligible to receive office space, complete with a telephone, computer and four gray walls. Chartered organization offices are located on the fifth floor in the halls adjacent to the DSC main office (room 5495). Come on up, wander around and get lost. Everybody does!

Information on any of the DSC Chartered Organizations, or information about how to charter an organization, may be obtained from Carolyn Fisher, DSC Co-Chair for Student Affairs, at cfisher1@gc.cuny.edu or (212) 817-7881.
