The SEG Foundation supports education through scholarships and grants awarded to graduate and undergraduate students pursuing a degree in geophysics or a related scientific field. In addition to approximately $100,000 available for general scholarships, sponsored scholarships are available to students who meet certain specific criteria.
(1)The G.W. Hohmann undergraduate and graduate awards are restricted to students whose course of study is directed toward a degree in geophysics with an emphasis on mining or electrical methods.
(2)The Lucien LaCoste award ($10,000) is restricted to a graduate student whose degree is in geophysics with a special emphasis on gravity exploration.
(3)The Robert E. Sheriff award ($12,000) and the Margaret S. Sheriff award ($6,000) were recently established to enable a non-U.S. resident to study geophysics at the graduate level at the University of Houston.
The awards to recipients range from $500 to $12,000 per academic year. The term of each scholarship is one academic year; however, the scholarship is renewable. Any Recognized College or University in the United States which offers courses of study in geophysics or a closely related field may be chosen by the recipients. Deadline is March 1. This program supports advanced research to improve the understanding of significant contemporary economic, political and social developments relating to Europe, European integration, and relations between Europe and the U.S. Projects should involve either comparative analysis of a specific issue in more than one country or the exploration of an issue in a single country in ways that can be expected to have relevance for other countries. The geographic scope of the program includes Western, Central and Eastern Europe, including Russia and Turkey as they relate to Europe, but not the Central Asian countries that were formerly part of the Soviet Union. Support for pre-dissertation research will note exceed $3,000, and recipients are expected to spend at least six weeks in Europe working on the design of their dissertations. Support for dissertation fieldwork in Europe is available for up to one year, with the length of time based on the requirements for the proposed research, up to a maximum of $20,000, with additional funds for travel of up to $2,000. Recipients of support for advanced research are expected to work full-time on the proposed project, for a period not less than one academic term and not greater than one year. (1) Getty Graduate Internships. The Getty is offering full-time internships for graduate students who intend to pursue careers in art museums and related fields of the visual arts, humanities,and sciences. Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate course of study leading to an advanced degree in a field relevant to the internship sought. Internships are full-time for eight months beginning in September, with the exception of conservation internships, which are full-time for twelve months. Grant amounts are $17,300 for eight months and $25,000 for twelve months. The grant includes health benefits and an educational travel allowance. Housing is not provided. Deadline is December 15.
(2) Grants for Residential Scholars. These grant categories apply to scholars who are in residence at the Getty Center in Los Angeles.

A range of approaches is supported: direct services, legal services, public education, advocacy, and technical assistance. In most program areas, the Foundation seeks to fund both organizations offering direct services and those working to influence public policy. An $11,500 stipend is awarded for an internship between January to June.
