Villa I Tatti offers up to fifteen post-doctoral fellowships each academic year. These fellowships are available for postdoctoral scholars doing advanced research in any aspect of the Italian Renaissance and are normally reserved for scholars in the early stages of their careers. Projects do not have to be devoted to Florentine subjects, yet it must be possible for the greater part of the project to be accomplished in Florence. Each Fellow is offered a place to study, use of the Biblioteca and Fototeca Berenson, lunches on weekdays, and various other privileges, the most important of which is the opportunity to meet scholars from a variety of countries working in related fields. The Fellowship is open to scholars of any nationality. On the average, over more than forty years of operation, about half the Fellows have been American and half from Europe and the rest of the world, though the proportion changes in any given year.
The fiscal year for fellowships, as for all Harvard appointments, runs from July 1 to June 30. The full academic year begins in early September, and all Fellows are expected to be in residence from then until the following June, and to participate actively in the life of the center for the full period of their fellowship. Stipends will be awarded according to individual needs, and a projected budget is requested from successful candidates at a later stage. Stipends generally do not exceed $40,000. The program includes one-year internships in Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa, Burkina Faso and Mexico. Visions in Action is a nonsectarian, nonpolitical organization dedicated to providing volunteer opportunities in urban Africa with nonprofit development organizations. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until March 1, for June programs; April 1, for July programs; May 15, for August programs and July 1, for October programs. Applications are invited for Fellowships of between two and six months, tenable in the period: May 2005 - September 2007. No limitation will be placed on the area of research within the Humanities. Most Fellowships are honorary, but limited support towards expenses is available to a small number of candidates. Fellowships offered of between 2and 6 months. No limitation is placed on the area of research within the Humanities, but some emphasis is given to issues in Medical Ethics, Business Ethics, and Environmental Ethics. All Fellows are allocated a study room within the Institute. Fellows hold one or two seminars during their tenure, and submit a report on their research at the end of their Fellowship. No regular teaching is required. It is expected that Fellows will be in residence throughout the tenure of their Fellowship. The Institute will be pleased to help with finding suitable accommodation in Edinburgh. The Institute is near the University library (from which books may be borrowed) and within easy reach of the National Library of Scotland, the Central City Library, the National Galleries and Museums, the Library of the Society of Antiquaries in Scotland, the Library of The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, and the National Archives of Scotland.
