Getting to The Graduate Center and around Manhattan

1. All our meetings take place at The Graduate Center. Go to Google Maps and type “365 Fifth Avenue, New York” to easily locate our superb mid-Manhattan location at 5th Avenue and 34th Street. Google Maps will give you various perspectives on our address and surroundings, as well as all of New York. The Graduate Center is across from the Empire State Building and five blocks from New York City Library, two landmark locations.
*You can also get directions here.

2. Note that The Graduate Center is on 5th @ 34th St., within walking distance of Pennsylvania Station, Grand Central Station, and Port Authority. The latter are the main transit hubs linking the city's complex transit system, including connections to airports and suburban lines.

MOVING AROUND IN MANHATTAN. If you plan on using subway or bus lines in Manhattan, keep in mind that in mid-town they normally run on a north-south direction along main avenues. Manhattan is remarkably simple in this respect. Along Fifth Avenue, divides Manhattan into EAST SIDE and WEST SIDE, traffic runs on a southern (S) or downtown direction. On the EAST SIDE the main avenues east of 5h Avenue are: Madison (N), Park (both N//S), Lexington (S), 3rd Avenue (N), 2nd  Avenue (S), and 1st  Avenue (N). On the WEST SIDE, the main avenues west of 5th Avenue are: 6th (N), 7th (S), 8th (N), 9th (S), and 10th Avenues. Broadway runs toward downtown (S), but complicates the easy pattern of parallel avenues by running diagonal with respect to the main grid. It intersects 7th Ave in Times Square (42th St.), 6th Avenue around Herald Square (34th St.), and 5th Avenue on 23th Street.

REMEMBER: If you take public transportation, get off at 34th street stops (or nearest). If you find yourself a bit off 5th Avenue and do not feel like walking, consider the cross-town busses running along 34th Street in both East and West directions.

3. Detailed information about The Graduate Center itself can be found in http://www.gc.cuny.edu/about_gc/. For information about all our academic programs and facilities, visit www.gc.cuny.edu.

4. The Bildner Center for Western Hemisphere Studies functions within The Graduate Center. Information about the Bildner Center is available in www.bildner.org. If you type “Bildner” in Google, we normally come first in the hits list.

5. The MTA (Manhattan Transportation Authority) runs the city’s great public transit system. Browse their website (http://www.mta.info/) for any question you may have about suburban and city transit (including lines, routes, schedules, prices, connections to airport). Subway stations sell MetroCards you can use for both subway and bus trips, including transfers (free within 2 hours, certain limits apply). For information about MetroCards, visit http://www.mta.info/metrocard/.
