Piero Gleijeses
Professor, Johns Hopkins University
Prof. Gleijeses has published extensively on the U.S.
response to crises in Latin America and Africa. His most recent book
is Shattered Hope: The Guatemalan Revolution and the United States,
1944-1954 (Princeton University Press, 1991). His new book, Conflicting
Missions: Havana, Washington and Africa, 1959-1976, will be published
this fall by the University of North Carolina Press. It is based on
extensive research in the Cuban archives (including those of the Central
Committee, the armed forces and the Foreign Ministry) and in the archives
of the United States, Belgium, the United Kingdom, the Federal Republic
of Germany and the former German Democratic Republic, as well as on
interviews with more than 160 protagonists from the United States, Cuba
and Africa. Professor Gleijeses recently participated in an international
conference in Havana on the occassion of the 40th anniversary of the
Bay of Pigs (Playa Girón) conflict.
