Grassroots Associations and Democracy in Brazil

Dr. Rowan Ireland
La Trobe University, Australia and Visiting Scholar at Harvard University's David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies

Prof. Rowan Ireland is currently writing a book on grassroots associations and democracy in Brazilian cities. "Tocqueville in Brazil" is the pop label for the themes explored, as he examines various types of "social capital" in the associational life of religious groups and local manifestations of popular movements in Sao Paulo, Recife, and other cities. For background material, see Popular Religions and the Building of Democracy in Latin America: Saving the Tocquevillian Parallel Journal of Interamerican Studies and World Affairs (41:4, 111-136) and the book Kingdoms Come: Religion and Politics in Brazil (Pittsburgh: University of Pittsburgh Press, 1992).
