y el Socialismo en Chile The 30th anniversary of the coup d’etat that overthrew the Popular Unity government in 1973 has led to a new re-assessment of the causes and strategic successes and failure of the Chilean left, right, and center before and after the coup. The transition to democracy and the adoption of neoliberalism have led to renewed debate within the Left. The seminar will explore these topics. Dr. Carlos Antonio Molina Bustos, MD, was the Vice Minister of Health in the Popular Unity government of President Salvador Allende, 1970-1973. After a 10 year exile following the coup d’etat of 1973, he returned to Chile and was part of the leadership of the resurgent popular-left resistance movement during the 1983-1989 period. He has held major public health/medical appointments in Mexico and Chile. A long time political commentator, he co-founded the journal Encuentro XXI and is active in the Left Renovation Project in today’s Chile. Dr. Patricio Quiroga Zamora, Ph.D., is a professor of history at the University of Valpariso and ARSIS University (Santiago). He is the author of six books and many articles on the Chilean armed forces, Salvador Allende, and contemporary Chilean history. A former leader in the Socialist Party of Chile, he is on the editorial board of Encuentro XXI and is active in the left Renovation Project in Chile.
