The Brazilian Economy and the Second Washington Consensus

Prof. Luiz Carlos Bresser-Pereira

Former Minister of Finance, State Reform, and Science and Technology

Dr. Luiz Carlos Bresser-Pereira has had a distinguished career in academia, public service, and the private sector. He is Professor of Economics of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (São Paulo) and Editor of "Brazilian Journal of Political Economy." He served as Minister of Science and Technology and President of CNPq (1999), Minister of State Reform (1995-1998), and Finance Minister (1987). Formerly, he was also Chief of Staff of the State of São Paulo (Franco Montoro administration, 1985-1987), President of BANESPA (Banco do Estado de São Paulo, 1983-1985). He has published several books, including "Reforma do Estado para a Cidadania" (1998); "Economic Crisis and State Reform in Brazil" (Lynne Rienner, 1996); "Economic Reforms in New Democracies" (Cambridge, 1993, with co-authors Adam Przeworski and José Maria Maravall), "Development and Crisis in Brazil" (Lynne Rienner, 1984); "Economia Brasileira: Uma Introdução Crítica" (1982). As found in his website (www.bresserpereira.org.br), he is also author of many articles, essays, and interviews. In the business sector, he has served as a member of the board of directors and of the executive committee of the Pão de Açúcar group.
