About the Speaker:

Mirta Yáñez, a narrator, poet, and essayist, received her Ph.D. in Philological Sciences at the Universidad de La Habana in Havana, Cuba. A scholar of both 19th century Latin American literature and Cuban contemporary literature, she has participated in seminars and colloquia as well as offered courses and conferences at universities and research centers in Europe, the United States, and Latin America. Her numerous literary awards include the Premio de la Crítica, bestowed upon her on three separate occasions, and the Förderpreis der Initiative LiBeraturpreis in Frankfurt, Germany. She has been a Writer in Residence at the Maison des Écrivains Étrangers et des Traducteurs de Saint-Nazaire in France. In 2004, a session dedicated to her work entitled, “Gender Inside Cuba: The Fiction of Mirta Yáñez” was presented at the MLA convention in Philadelphia. She has published anthologies, prefaces, and other texts of literary criticism, including Estatuas de sal: cuentistas cubanas contemporáneas, La Habana, 1996; Álbum de poetisas cubanas, La Habana, 1997; Cubana (narrative), Boston, 1998; Habaneras, España, 2000; and Making a Scene (narrative), London, 2004. Considered one of the most distinguished intellectuals of her generation, some of her works have been translated into German and English. Her recent publications include El búfalo ciego y otros cuentos; Serafín y las aventuras del Reino de los Comejenes; Del azafrán al lirio, and Falsos documentos.
