Q: Do you have on-line application?

A: Yes, you can fill out an online application. There are three ways you can apply. For more information please visit http://web.gc.cuny.edu/business/Application.html

Q: Can I take non-matriculate courses through the Ph.D. in Business program?

A: We are sorry, but under no circumstances may courses be taken on a non-matriculate basis. We only accept applications for full-time, on-campus enrollment.

Q: Can I attend the Ph.D. in Business program part-time?

A: We do not offer part-time enrollment in the Ph.D. program. All students must maintain a full-time course load during their enrollment in the program. Full-time is considered a minimum of 12 credits per semester.

Q: Is the GRE acceptable for application to the program?

A: We only accept GMAT.

Q: What is the minimum GMAT score required for application?

A: The Ph.D. in Business program does not enforce a strict "minimum" score for application. However, the average GMAT score of accepted applicants is 700. As in other programs, the higher your GMAT score, the more likely your chances of acceptance.

Q: What is the minimum TOEFL score required for application?

A: The Ph.D. in Business program does not enforce a strict "minimum" score for application. however the average TOEFL score of accepted applicants is 650. Please be advised that English language proficiency is a very important part of the application process, and a low TOEFL score severely hinders your likelihood of acceptance.

Q: I took the GMAT before I got my MBA. Can I use the same test scores?

A: GMAT scores up to five years old can be accepted by the program. Beyond that, we cannot accept old test scores.

Q:Do you offer student housing?

A: Baruch College does not have any dormitories. Students interested in housing should visit http://www.gc.cuny.edu .

Q: Does the program offer night or weekend classes?

A: The Doctoral Program in Business is a full-time, day-time program. As such, we do not offer any night or weekend courses.

Q: Can I work full-time while I complete the program?

A: Because the program is full-time and day-time, most students do not work while completing the program. We do offer research assistantships, and there are many opportunities for adjunct teaching during the summer months.

Q: Can my GMAT score be waived?

A: The GMAT score is a critical part of the application process. Your application will be reviewed without it, but we will not be able to make any decision until we get an official score.

Q: Can the application fee be waived?

A: We are sorry, but the application fee cannot be waived. Your application will not be processed without it.

Q: Do you offer any other Ph.D. Programs in Business?

Q: Do you offer an MBA?

A: The Zicklin School of Business, part of Baruch College, offers several MBA programs, including part-time programs. Students enrolled in the Ph.D. program are eligible for a Baruch College MBA after the completion of 45 credits. For more information go to the Academic Policies page .

Q: What are my chances of acceptance into the Ph.D. Program in Business?

A: The program accepts approximately fifteen to twenty students a year. On average, this is about 8% of the total number of applications.

Q: Can I apply for the program in the spring semester?

A: The program only accepts students for the Fall semester. Application deadline is January 15.

Q: Do you offer a summer semester?

A: No, we do not. Most of our students spend the summer working, in either research assistantships or as adjunct teachers.

Q: How long do I have to complete the program?

A: Students are required to complete the program in seven years, if they enter with a relevant master's degree, or in eight years, if they enter without a master's. A realistic expectation for completing the program is four to five years.

Q: Do I need a graduate degree to apply to the program?

A: You do not need a graduate degree to apply. There is no preference given toward students who have already taken their MBA. The only notable difference is that students who have already achieved a graduate degree can transfer up to six credits. However, if you have not already received your MBA, and your GPA is below 3.5, you may consider enrolling in an MBA program before applying, as a chance to raise your GPA.

Q: Is there a work experience requirement?

A: There is no work experience requirement for the Ph.D. Program in Business.

Q: Does it matter what my BA is in?

A: There is no preference given toward students who took their BA in business related fields. The program is open to students who have taken their undergraduate degrees in all areas of natural sciences, social sciences, and liberal arts. The only significant difference is that students who took their undergraduate degrees in unrelated fields may have to complete other prerequisites that are not credited toward the degree.

Q: What does the completed application consist of?

A: The completed application packet consists of the completed application, the financial aid application, the official GMAT score from Educational Testing Services (college code XWT-S7-47), the official TOEFL score from Educational Testing Services (college code 2113), transcripts of all college work (including courses that were not taken towards a degree), two academic letters of recommendation, the non-refundable $125 application fee, and the International Student's Packet (International Students only).

Q: Where should I send my test scores? / I accidentally sent my scores to Baruch College?

A: All test scores should be sent to The Graduate Center, college code XWT-S7-47, and not to Baruch College. If you accidentally sent your GMAT score to Baruch College, it must be resent by Educational Testing Services. Baruch does not save the official GMAT scores.

Q: Can I transfer credits?

A: For students who have received their Master's degree in a related discipline, credits are transferable. Which courses and how many credits are up to the discretion of the executive officer.

Q: How many credits is the Ph.D. program?

A: The program consists of a total of 60 credits of course work, plus the dissertation.

Q: How do I apply for financial aid?

A: All students in the Ph.D. Program in Business are automatically considered for financial aid.

Q: What kinds of financial aid are available?

A: Most of the financial assistance given to our students is given in the form of research assistantships, which range up to $18,000 per academic year. In order to receive these assistantships students work 15 hours per week for a professor in their area of specialization. There are also several fellowships available from the Graduate Center. It covers most of the tuition.

Third and fourth year students combine teaching with half-time research assistantships to make up their financial support. There are also many opportunities available as adjunct lecturers during the summer.

Q: My financial aid application is from last year.

A: You do not need a new application packet. You have several options. You can download the application from the web and print out the needed updated pages at www.gc.cuny.edu. You can simply change the dates on the application you currently possess. Or you can leave the financial aid part of the application blank. You will have an opportunity to fill it out upon acceptance into the program.

Q: I've taken my GMAT twice. Which score do you look at?

A: We only consider the highest score, whether it be the most recent or not. However, this rule applies only to GMATs taken within the past five years. If you got a higher score six or more years ago, it will not be taken into account.

Q: What is the deadline for application?

A: The application deadline for fall semester is January 15 of each year. We do not admit classes in the spring semester.

  Q: Do you offer a combined MBA/Ph.D.?

A: We do not offer a combined MBA/Ph.D. program, but we do offer a provision for our non-MBA students to be eligible to receive an en-route MBA from Baruch College after the completion of 45 credits in the program and the completion of the first examination. Q: Where do I send my writing sample?

A: Your writing sample should be sent to the Office of Admissions, The Graduate Center. It can be e-mailed to admissions@gc.cuny.edu.

Q: What does the writing sample entail?

A: The writing sample should be a sample of your academic work. It can be a paper from a previous course.

Q: I'm having problems printing this page. What should I do?

A: Internet Explorer is set up to automatically adjust when the text of the page is white, but Netscape Navigator is not. To correct this problem, go to Page Setup under the file menu on your computer. Click on Black Text. Then click ok. Your browser will print white text as black from now on.
