URBAN GOVERNANCE WITH AND FOR CHILDREN

In recent years CERG has been increasingly involved in urban governance issues as they pertain to children, both in the USA and internationally. Some of these initiatives are focused on involving children more directly in local planning and decision making processes; others focus more broadly on the role of local government with regard to children

International Efforts

In collaboration with colleague David Satterthwaite at the International Institute for Environment and Development, Sheridan Bartlett was involved in the production of the UNICEF Innocenti Digest, Poverty and Exclusion among Urban Children. (IIED)

Currently, working with Save the Children Sweden and the UNICEF Child Friendly Cities Secretariat in Florence, and funded by the Swedish aid agency SIDA, Sheridan Bartlett is working with researchers in various parts of the world collecting case studies that provide insights into the process of urban management and governance as it pertains to children’s priorities and concerns. This work focuses in particular on the physical environments of urban children.

These case studies will be published as part of a special issue of Children, Youth and Environment on Children and Governance.
