CLAGS Launches Seminars in the City

In July, CLAGS (in partnership with A Different Light Bookstore) launches a public education series, Seminars in the City. This monthly series of structured discussions of major works in lesbian/gay/bisexual/ transgender and queer studies, led by CLAGS Board members who are scholars in the field, will be aimed at nonacademic readers. We hope that Seminars in the City will supplement the scholarly colloquium series, in which academics present works in progress, by offering "lay people" the same kind of forum to learn together. No background required, and no term papers: just a willingness to read one book a month and share your thoughts.

This summer, Elizabeth Freeman will lead "Lesbian and Gay Fictions," discussing James Baldwin’s Giovanni’s Room and Jeanette Winterson’s Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit. "Introducing Queer Theory," to held in the Fall, will be led by Ann Pellegrini, who will facilitate discussions on the work of Judith Butler, Eve Sedgwick, Annamarie Jagose, and David Halperin. Martin Manalansan will be in charge of the Spring’s "LGBT History, Culture, and Identity."

Discussions will take place at A Different Light Bookstore on the second Saturday afternoon of each month. A Different Light is offering a 10% discount on seminar books. Participants are asked to make a $5 tax-deductible donation to CLAGS for each session. Registration is limited to twenty-five on a first-come, first-served basis. The first session will meet on July 11 from 3:00-5:00pm. To register, call CLAGS, (212) 642-2924.
