Funding News
CLAGS is grateful to the visionary individuals and institutions in the
foundation world who recognize the importance of lesbian and gay studies through their
generous financial support of our programs.
This Spring, CLAGS received a $15,000 grant fromThe Gill Foundation.
The Gill Foundation was established in 1994 by Tim Gill, the founder and chairman of
Quark, Inc., a Denver-based computer software company. The Gill Foundation supports the
needs of under-served and under-funded communities by focusing its grants on programs for
gay men and lesbians and issues related to HIV/AIDS. In addition to grantmaking, the
foundation operates special programs such as the OutGiving Project providing technical
assistance and other resources to support the communities it serves. Tim Gill and the Gill
Foundation, which has offices in Colorado and Washington, DC, have provided over $10
million to hundreds of community organizations. Their general operating support for CLAGS
will be vitally important next year as we continue to break new ground in gay and lesbian
studies and as we expand the national resources we make available through our
publications, our web-site, our conferences and this newsletter.
The Paul Rapoport Foundation continues its long history of giving
to CLAGS with a $25,000 grant for general operating expenses. The first $15,000 of the
award is an outright grant, whereas the remaining $10,000 is a matching grant, intended to
encourage CLAGS to continue its expansion of its membership base.
The Northstar Fund has pledged $1,800 as seed money of a new arts
advocacy project.
The Manhattan State Assembly Delegation recently earmarked $7,500
to support the production of the CLAGS newsletter. Members of the delegation include
Nelson A. Denis, Adrinao Espaillat, Herman D. Farrell, Jr., Deborah J. Glick, Richard N.
Gottfried, Alexander B. Grannis, Steven Sanders, Sheldon Silver, Scott Stringer, Edward C.
Sullivan, and Keith Wright.
