I received by BA from the Johns Hopkins University and my MA and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Political Science. In 2006 I published a book entitled Drugs and Democracy in Rio de Janeiro: Trafficking, Social Networks, and Public Security with the University of North Carolina Press. I have published articles in the Journal of Latin American Studies, Latin American Politics and Society, and Qualitative Sociology. I have received awards from the Tinker Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies, from the Fulbright Commission, and from the Institute for the Study of World Politics. I am currently studying the impact of conflict on politics in Medellín, Colombia, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Kingston, Jamaica.
