The Language Requirement
The CUNY
Graduate Center Language Reading Program offers intensive,
non-credit courses in fall, spring, and summer designed to assist graduate
students in meeting the language requirements for their degrees. Registration
materials may be obtained by calling the Language Reading
Program (212) 817-2081 or by writing: Language Reading Program,

Summer courses for reading knowledge in French, German, Ancient Greek,
Italian, Latin, and Spanish will be offered in six weeks in the CUNY
Graduate Center Language Reading Program. These non-credit, intensive
classes are designed to assist graduate students in meeting the language
requirements for their degrees. Classes meet three days a week (MWF) for
two hours and forty minutes each day. Level One assumes no knowledge of the
language; Level Two classes are for students who can read the language. Day
classes begin on June 14th and end on July 26th. Evening classes in Level
One French, German, and Latin begin on June 28th and end on August 9th.
Tuition for these courses for students matriculated in the spring semester
in a degree-bearing program of CUNY is $275, $500 for non-matriculated students.
Payment is by check, cash, or money order only. Registration
forms are available in the lobby of the Graduate Center and in the office
of
the Language Reading Program (room 4415). Registration for these courses
is
not handled by the registrar's office nor do these courses appear on the
student's transcript. However, official documentation of each student's
performance will be supplied by the Office of the Language Reading Program
upon request. Registration closes on May 24th, but French and German
classes may be closed by then. For further information, please call (212)
817-2081.
Students may satisfy The Graduate Center’s language requirement
either by demonstrating competency in an advanced methodological technique
or statistical method
or by demonstrating the ability to read a foreign language appropriate to
the
field of study.
Competency in Research Methods
Students who do not receive a grade of B or better in CRJ U700 and CRJ
U701 may be dropped from the program by action of the Executive
Committee on the basis of a review of their entire record. Those receiving a
grade of less than B who are permitted to remain in the program will be
required to repeat the course or take additional work.
