The CUNY Baccalaureate Program for Unique and Interdisciplinary Studies

Planning Your Area(s)

Every student in the program develops one or two unique and/or interdisciplinary areas of concentration, which correspond to a major at a traditional college. In applying to the program, you must provide a preliminary outline of your area(s) on your application. This is only a draft; if you are accepted to the program, your plan will only become official once it is approved by the program's Academic Director and your chosen faculty mentor. Use the following guidelines in planning your area(s) of concentration:

  • Please only list intermediate or upper-level courses when outlining your area of concentration. These courses must have at least one pre-requisite in the same department. Do not list any introductory courses. Of course, you will need to take introductory courses as necessary prerequisites to upper level courses, but they will be counted toward your degree separately from your area of concentration.
  • Area of concentration coursework must be offered at a senior college and come from a department that offers a bachelor’s degree.
  • A maximum of 50% of the courses which you list for your area of concentration may have been completed previously. Please make a notation next to any courses which you have already taken.
  • Although business courses at Baruch are open to CUNY BA students, you must obtain a mentor from Baruch and meet an extensive list of prerequisite classes. Therefore, if you are interested in taking these courses, you may want to select courses from another senior CUNY College that offers a degree in business (see Taking Business Courses at Baruch).
  • Many of the courses offered throughout the university are available for review online at http://student.cuny.edu/cgi-bin/CourseCatalog/CCatColleges.pl.
  • Each course you list must indicate all information as required by the application including College, Department and Course Number, Title of Course, and Number of Credits. You must list a minimum of eight (8) courses to support one area of concentration proposal and six (6) each for dual area proposals. Include the title of your area of concentration above each sequence of courses (please see examples below).
