Professor Liebman's research focuses on two principal areas:
the intersections of the cinema with modernism in the arts, and
the representation of history in films. He has published widely
on early French cinema, American avant-garde cinema, Soviet cinema
and post-World War II German cinema. His awards include a National
Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship, and the special issue of
October (No. 72), entitled "Berlin 1945: War and Rape," which
he co-edited with Annette Michelson, received the Association of
American Publishers prize for the best single issue of a scholarly
journal in 1995. He is a member of the Advisory Board for the critical
journal October and a former member of the Board of Trustees
of Anthology Film Archives in New York City.
