By GUEST EDITOR, Loretta Lorance
This issue of PART is concerned with 20th century architecture and urbanism.
There are four feature articles:
Noah Chasin, The Fall and Rise of Austrian Architecture: The Redemptive Strategies of Coop Himmelblau and Hans Hollein;
Loretta Lorance, Promises, Promises: The Allure of Household Appliances in the 1920s;
William Menking, Archigram: Welcome to New York;
Claire Zimmerman, Comrades and Citizens: Hannes Meyer, Ludwig Hilberseimer, and K. Michael Hays.
Each explores a different area of study within the history of architecture and urbanism. Not all are primarily concerned with architectural form, but all are concerned with factors that impact upon it. And, they share the assumption that architecture, urbanism and their accessories can improve the quality of life. Finally, and what makes this issue so exciting, is that the articles explore somewhat more obscure avenues of study to demonstrate how the overlooked or forgotten can offer new insight into the history of 20th century architecture and urbanism.
