Elisa P. Reis
is professor of Sociology and Political Science at the Institute of Philosophy
and Social Sciences (IFCS) at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).
Dr. Reis is a visiting scholar at Columbia University. She is studying elite
perceptions of social inequality in Brazil, the Philippines, South Africa,
and other countries. She has written extensively on this topic, including:
"Elites'Perception of Poverty: An International Research Project"
(CROP Newsletter, October, 1999), "As Ciências Sociais e o Bug
do Milênio" (Revista Brasileira de Ciências Sociais, 1999),
and "Elite Perceptions of Poverty: Brazil" (IDS Bulletin, April,
1999). Prof. Reis is a Member of the Advisory Council of CROP (Comparative
Research on Poverty), a research network of the International Social Sciences
Council, and has served as advisor for the Social Sciences at the Research
Foundation of the State of Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ).
