Face
to Face with Cuban Music:
Careo Musical al Estilo Cubano
Mirta Gomez and Alex Fernandez-Fox and his group, Yerason
Classical
Cuban music gets a popular twist as pianist Mirta Gomez and Alex Fernandez-Fox
and his group, Yerason, engage in a playful musical dialogue. Ms. Gomez opens
the evening by performing a selection of 19th-century Contradanses and Danses
written by Cuban composers Manuel Saumell and Ignacio Cervantes. Yerason,
featuring Alex Fernandez-Fox on the tres, responds with a Danzon Cubano inspired
by those earlier works. Join Ms. Gomez and Mr. Fernandez-Fox as they explore
the influence of classical Cuban composers on popular music in Cuba.
Mirta Gomez received her early piano training from her mother in her native Cuba. She continued her musical education at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. She frequently lectures on Cuban composers of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Alex Fernandez-Fox is a classically trained musician who studied at the Mannes College of Music in New York and the Escuela Nacional de Arte in Havana. In addition to playing the piano and guitar, he performs on the tres, a traditional six-stringed Cuban folk guitar
