Toward a More Egalitarian Third World City

Enrique Peñalosa's presentation will be on a new urban development model for Third World Cities. He will discuss transportation, land use, housing for the poor, pollution abatement and public space.

Enrique Peñalosa served as Mayor of Bogotá between 1997-2000. As Mayor of the capital of Colombia, he was the political and administrative head of a city of 6.5 million inhabitants. During his tenure Mr. Peñalosa was responsible for accomplishments, manu of them related to the promotion of a more sustainable development. Prof. Peñalosa is currently a Visiting Professor in the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at New York University. He is working on a book on a new urban-development model for Third World cities. He has published many essays and two books: "Democracy and Capitalism: Challenges of the Coming Century" and "Capitalism: The Best Option." He holds Masters and Doctorate degrees in Management and Public Administration from the Institut International D’Administration Publique and the University of Paris II in Paris, as well as a B.A. in Economics and History from Duke University.
