2003 EventsCurrent Issues in Politics and Economics in Latin America Panelists:
This session will analyze such current economic issues as free trade, regional trade agreements, and programs to promote sustainable development in terms of their impact on governmental policies, as well as inter-American relations. Efforts on the part of Brazil to generate consensus within Latin America in order to influence US policies will be examined. The role of global market forces will also be reviewed, as well as the efforts of international organizations, including the United Nations and international financial institutions, to influence governmental and other policies. As Director for Brazil and the Southern Cone, Susan Cronin is responsible for management of trade policy with respect to Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. She served as deputy to the lead negotiator of the recently concluded U.S. - Chile Free Trade Agreement and is currently managing the Office of the Americas role in its implementation. As a Foreign Service Officer, Susan was detailed to USTR from 1996-1998 as Director for Central America and the Caribbean. As Economic Advisor to the U.S. Ambassador to the Organization of American States, Susan participated in the All Nations meetings that led to the first Summit of the Americas and the first FTAA Ministerial. In that capacity she also represented the U.S. Mission to the OAS at the meetings of the Inter-American Committee on Telecommunications (CITEL). Dr. Graciana del Castillo is a founding partner and Managing Director of MAG, Macroeconomics Advisory Group. She previously served as Director for Sovereign Ratings at Standard & Poor's. Graciana held senior positions in the Office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and at the International Monetary Fund. She has taught in graduate programs on the Latin American economy at Columbia University and has published extensively in leading professional journals on countries in crises, both financial crises and post-conflict. She received her Ph.D. from Columbia University in Economics. Mike Esterl is a special writer for emerging markets. Before that, he served three years as Latin America editor for Dow Jones Newswire. Prior to that, he served as the Mexico City bureau chief. He obtained his masters degree from the University of Toronto.
