Papers can address questions about broad as well as specific areas of state action, policy domains, economic sectors and the like. Just what roles does the state play in a given policy area? What do the available bodies of evidence indicate/suggest in terms of effectiveness? How are the policy areas organized (e.g. relations between government agencies, associations, the private sector, civil society, other actors)? What factors explain specific historical moments or continuity/variation through time? We want to explore these and related questions in the context of conceptual/theoretical frameworks focused on state formation/development and the involvement of leading socioeconomic, civil society, and political actors. Please see the preliminary program for examples of focus areas and specialists.
The papers must be written following the formatting below:
1) Microsoft Word or Word Perfect
2) Maximum length: 30 pages (8 1/2" x 11", double spaced, Times New Roman, 12 pt.)
3) All citations should be internal (e.g. Silva, 1999:23)
4) Use endnotes instead of footnotes (Times New Roman, 10 pt.)
5) Punctuation marks should be on the inside of quotations
6) All acronyms and names must be the full version when used for the first time. After that, you may use only the acronyms or last names.
7) Capitalization: Standard US convention: capitalize all but prepositions, conjunctions, and articles in titles.
8) Use quotation marks (" ") for direct quotes. Use single quotations (' ') for something more commonly said. For examples, 'protecting' the Real was critical to the Cardoso government...
9) Use little or no formatting of headings and bibliography (we will format the text in a standardized manner).
10) Use no more than 1-2 levels of subheadings (beyond the title).
