Louis Putzel
Louis Putzel is a second-year doctoral student in Biology (Plant Sciences) at the Graduate School of the City University of New York. In 1989 he completed his B.A. degree in East Asian Studies at Columbia University and in 1999 received a Master’s of International Affairs/Environmental Policy, also from Columbia University. His research pertains to how land tenure, zoning, and markets for resources - including land, timber/non-timber forest products and agricultural products – affect tropical biological diversity and local livelihoods. His current geographic focus is the Peruvian Amazon. Since 1997, he has worked in various capacities for several non-profit organizations in the U.S. and Africa, including the Rainforest Alliance, Search for Common Ground, People and Plants International, the International Rescue Committee, and the New York Botanical Garden, where he is currently associated as a student. Prior to 1997, he worked in marketing in Hong Kong and Beijing, the People’s Republic of China.
Louis’ hobbies include wild mushroom picking, Chinese cooking, and, when he has the opportunity, light farm work. Louis is a Fellow at Kennedy High School.
