Identify the community
need to relocate a local High School and create a task force to address the
problem. The first action would be to
create a task force including members from the local PTSA, School
Administration, Town municipality members, students and County representatives. Members from this group will create a
feasibility study to determine the best location for development. The Task Force will determine the criteria
for optimum site selection. The students will use GIS and GPS Technologies to
develop final maps which meet the agreed upon task force criteria. |

Goals and Objectives Academic Learning Goal: To
educate the students on the use of GIS and GPS technology and its application
to solve community problems. Standard: MST standard 5 – Technology Learning Goal:
Students will understand opportunities for participating in decision making
regarding community problems. Standard: Social Studies standard 5 – Civics, Citizenship, and Government Service Community need: School relocation Possible Community
Partners: PTSA, municipal governments, school
district administration, and citizens (taxpayers) Objective: To gather input from all stakeholders in the community. Objective: To create a GIS map using the
information gathered and to present it at a public forum Technology Learning Goal: To learn how to use GIS/remote sensing to
identify all the properties which contain the attributes the task force found
to be necessary to develop the school site Objective: To identify pertinent information (i.e.
zoning, infrastructure, slopes, proximity to main roads, land use in area,
etc.) to be used by the task force. Learning Goal: To learn how to interpolate the collected
information into a presentation (i.e. map with attribute tables for each site
with hot link photos). Objective: To put the collected information into a
manageable form. Character Virtue: Civic virtue and Citizenship Objective: Students will participate in the task force, production of the map and presentation for the benefit of the community. Virtue: Giving Objective: The promotion of in-kind services
by the students and task force for the community
Key Activities Key Planning Activities 1. Plan class
time to learn GIT technology as it applies to the project. 2. Form the task force by identifying stakeholders and inviting them to organizational meetings. Key
Service Activities 1. Organize planning meeting and
compiling task force. 2. Identify optimum attributes from
analysis of remote sensing images (DOQs) through
queries and geoprocessing that would determine an
ideal location for the project. 3.
Creation of visual
GIS product (i.e. Map with site locations with hot link photos and attribute
tables.) 4.
Public presentation
summarizing project. Key Reflection Activities 1. Class discussion regarding the
opinions of student needs regarding the creation of a new school. Character
virtues of giving and civic involvement will be implicitly addressed. 2. Students will create an ongoing
journal to record their wants, wishes and concerns. 3. Poster presentation including
pictures and explanations of the different stages of the project. Civic
involvement and giving virtues are implicitly addressed. Power point and ArcView
GIS will be utilized in the presentation. Celebration Activity Kick-off refreshment and snacks party to celebrate
the public presentation. Parents
and community members will be donating the snacks and refreshments and also
invited to the celebration |
