Services of the Program

The Paraprofessional Academy is a NYC Department of Education - funded program which serves currently employed DC37 and UFT paraprofessionals. The program offers a wide-range of services including:

• Individual and group career counseling/academic planning to UFT and DC 37 substitute and full-time paraprofessionals (by appointment only).

• Workshops on staff development days, (upon principals' request) on issues regarding:

A - Returning to college (The Career Training Program)
B - Roles/responsibilities of paraprofessionals
C - NYS Teacher Certification Process

• Providing teacher certification information including NYS certification requirements, LAST/ATS-W/CST registration booklets, state applications, transcript evaluations, and Department of Education scholarships.

• Formulating professional development policy with interested stakeholders including the NYC Department of Education, the United Federation of Teachers, the NYS Education Department, and NYC senior and community colleges.

• Substitute paraprofessional orientations (by region) for all newly hired substitute paraprofessionals about how to best utilize the NYC Department of Education resources.
