The CUNY Graduate Center

The CUNY Graduate Center is located in mid-town Manhattan at 365 Fifth Avenue (on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 34th Street, diagonally opposite the Empire State Building).

The Graduate Center is easily reached from the 34th Street/Herald Square subway station on the B/D/F/V and N/R/Q/W lines and the 33rd Street station on the 6 line; it is also within easy walking distance from Penn Station (served by the A/C/E and 1/2/3 lines, as well as by Amtrak, New Jersey Transit, and the Long Island Railroad) and Grand Central Station (served by the 4/5/6 and 7 lines, as well as by MetroNorth commuter trains).

Transportation from the airports to Manhattan

Manhattan can be reached by public transit from all three major airports serving New York City.

From any of the terminals of John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK; http://www.kennedyairport.com/CommutingTravel/airports/html/kennedy.html), you can access the AirTrain (follow the signs in your terminal that direct you towards the AirTrain), which takes you to either of two off-airport locations from which you can access the New York City Subway system: Jamaica Station and Howard Beach Station).

Once at the Jamaica or Howard Beach AirTrain station, you can purchase a pay-per-ride MetroCard (you will need there to be a minimum balance of $7 on your MetroCard to exit AirTrain and access the subway; MetroCard gives you access to all New York City Transit options, including subways and buses) and proceed to the subway station by swiping your card at the turnstile.

At Howard Beach Station, you can access the A-train (which takes you to NYU at West 4th Street, or to the CUNY Graduate Center at 34th Street/Penn Station).

At Jamaica Station, you have a choice of transit options: you can either proceed to the subway station, where you can board an E-train (convenient if you are going to Midtown Manhattan), or a J- or Z-train (convenient for NYU); or you can take a Long Island Railroad commuter train into Penn Station. The latter is faster but slightly more expensive.

For travel into Midtown Manhattan, taking AirTrain to Jamaica Station and connecting to the subway or the LIRR is a better option than taking AirTrain to Howard Beach and catching the A-train.

From any of the terminals of Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR; http://www.panynj.gov/CommutingTravel/airports/html/newarkliberty.html), you can access the AirTrain (follow the signs in your terminal that direct you towards the AirTrain), which takes you to the Newark International Airport train station.

Once at the train station, you can purchase tickets for either a New Jersey Transit commuter train or an Amtrak train, both going into Penn Station (NJ Transit is less expensive than Amtrak and runs more frequently; travel time is roughly equal).

From Penn Station, you can access the New York City Transit system, with direct access to the A, C, E, 1, 2 and 3 trains. Penn Station is within easy walking distance of the CUNY Graduate Center.

From LaGuardia International Airport (LGA; http://www.laguardiaairport.com/CommutingTravel/airports/html/laguardia.html), you can access the New York City Transit system by boarding a variety of buses; the most convenient buses are the M60 (which takes you to 125th Street in Manhattan, from which you can access a variety of subway lines) and the Q33 (which takes you to the Jackson Heights/Roosevelt Avenue subway station, the terminus of the bus line, from which you can access the E, F, R, V and 7 trains, all of which take you into Manhattan). Please note that you need $2 in exact change in coins to be able to board a public bus at LGA: there are no MetroCard vending machines at LGA, and the fare boxes on New York City Transit buses do not accept bills; bus drivers and fare boxes do not provide change.

As an alternative to public transit, there are direct commercial buses running from all three airports. From JFK and LGA, you can board a New York Airport Service bus (http://www.nyairportservice.com/). The fares from JFK are $15 one-way, $27 round-trip; the fares from LGA are $12 one-way, $21 round-trip. From EWR, you can board the Olympia Trails/Coach USA Liberty Airport Express bus (http://www.coachusa.com/olympia/ss.newarkairport.asp); for fare information, please consult the website.

Taxi and limousine service is of course available from all three airports as well. You can find information about taxi service at the airports' websites, under Ground Transportation.
