In this talk I will discuss a series of studies that explore the use of predictive mechanisms in sentence processing, how these mechanisms help comprehenders to achieve rapid, accurate parsing, and what the limits of these mechanisms are. I will draw on a combination of behavioral and electrophysiological findings on English, Japanese, Chinese, Basque, and Hindi.
