Research Staff

Kate Menken is the principal investigator of the LTELL study. She is an Associate Professor of Linguistics at Queens College of the City University of New York (CUNY) and a Research Fellow at the Research Institute for the Study of Language in Urban Society at the CUNY Graduate Center. Previously, she was a researcher at the National Clearinghouse for Bilingual Education and a teacher of English as a second language. Kate received a doctorate in education (Ed.D.) in 2005 from Teachers College, Columbia University in International Education, specializing in Bilingual/Bicultural Education. Her research interests are in the areas of language policy, bilingual education, secondary emergent bilinguals, U.S. education reform, and high-stakes testing. Her recent books are: Negotiating Language Policies in Schools: Educators as Policymakers (co-authored with Ofelia García - Routledge, 2010) and English Learners Left Behind: Standardized Testing as Language Policy (Multilingual Matters, 2008).

Tatyana Kleyn has been involved in the LTELL study since its inception. She is an assistant professor in the Bilingual Education and TESOL program at the City College of New York. In 2007 she received an Ed.D. in international educational development at Teachers College, Columbia University. Tatyana has also been involved in research with the Garífuna population in Honduras and the U.S. She is the author of Immigration: The Ultimate Teen Guide (Scarecrow, 2011) and co-author of Teaching in Two Languages: A Guide for K-12 Bilingual Educators (Corwin, 2010) with Sharon Adelman-Reyes. Laura Ascenzi-Moreno has served as a research assistant for Phase II of the LTELL study. She is a doctoral student in Urban Education at the CUNY Graduate Center where she is currently working on a dissertation on the ways that bilingual teachers use assessments to meet the needs of bilingual learners. Nabin Chae has served as a research assistant for both phases of the LTELL study. She is a doctoral student in Urban Education at the CUNY Graduate Center as well as an adjunct at City College in the TESOL/Bilingual program. Nelson Flores has served as a research assistant for Phase II of the LTELL study. He is a doctoral student in Urban Education at the CUNY Graduate Center where he is currently working on a dissertation examining the ways that current U.S language ideologies marginalize bilingual populations.
