Symposium on
POLICE HARASSEMENT OF YOUTH OF COLOR

September 24th, 2009
1:30pm - 5:30pm
Graduate Center, City University of New York, Room C201

At this symposium, a group of scholars, lawyers and activists from up and down the eastern seaboard will begin to pool knowledge and local expertise on Police Harassment of Youth of Color. We are coming from Washington DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York City to think across various studies and campaigns, towards generating next steps and possible interventions. It promises to be an important and provocative exchange of ideas.

On the day, we will begin by introducing and briefly presenting the relevant studies and campaigns we are involved in within our cities. Following that, we will have a discussion about how we want to organize ourselves moving forward. Some ideas for next steps that are already percolating include: thinking/writing across studies; writing an Op Ed piece/ organizing a small conference; establishing a repository for stories of police harassment; writing an intervention grant on how to reduce negative interactions between youth and the police.

This meeting/gathering is co-sponsored by the CUNY Graduate Center PAR collective, the CUNY Graduate Center, and the DC/Baltimore Research Center on Child Health Disparities of Howard University.
