ABOUT THE PEOPLE

Faculty

Diversity of the Psychology Faculty
The Psychology Department prides itself on having a much wider variety of faculty available to students in comparison to other graduate schools. Our diverse faculty is the result of having three subprograms in Psychology (Social-Personality, Developmental, and Environmental) all housed together on the same floor and of being the main graduate hub for all of the CUNY campuses across New York City. While some of the faculty come and go between the Graduate Center (GC) and other campuses, allowing flexibility and a change of scene for students who follow them, others are stationed more consistantly at the GC on the 6th floor.

Students

The Beauty of the Cohort
Our community is built within and across cohorts; that is, groups of students who come into the doctoral program in the same year. During years 1 and 2, students in the same cohort participate in common classes and seminar activities and come to rely on each other for intellectual and social support. Students also collaborate with colleagues from other cohorts and subprograms on research projects, mentoring, teaching strategies or simply having lunch to chat about the next “milestone” in the program. Forty-seven percent of our students are students of color and come from many different backgrounds. There is also a large number of students who are interested in and do work on identity and social issues around sexuality and gender, in particular with the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community population.
