Program Overview
The Graduate School offers an interdisciplinary concentration in Medieval Studies
leading to a Ph.D. degree in one of the following fields: Comparative Literature,
English,
French, German, Spanish,History, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, or
Theatre. Students who complete the interdisciplinary concentration receive, in addition
to the doctoral degree, a Certificate in Medieval Studies.
The Certificate Program enables doctoral students specializing in medieval studies to broaden
their knowledge of medieval culture, to pursue their interestsin a more comprehensive context
than that afforded by specialization in a single field, and to enhance their usefullness as
teachers and memebers of an academic community. Students in the program follow a pattern of studies
that reflects, more truly than the methods of any single discipline, the interdisciplinary conditions
in which the works of the Middle Ages were created.
Medieval Studies in New York
The student engaged in medieval studies enjoys not only the resources of the Graduate School
library and its interlibrary loan facilities, but also those of the The New York Public
Library, the Metropolitan Museum, the Pierpont Morgan Library, and other important collections
in the New York metropolitan area. Two student associations--the Medieval Study
and The Medieval Seminar--provide opportunities for the presentation of papers and for mutual exchange among
students in the various disciplines.
In addition, students pursuing a certificate in the Medieval Studies Program are eligible to take courses at The General Theological Seminary, located at
175 Ninth Avenue in Manhattan. A consortium with The General Theological Seminary makes available a wider range of courses & seminars, thus permitting students
who pursue a certificate in Medieval Studies at the Graduate School a greater opportunity to take courses outside their immediate discipline.
