Burkhart Biography

Louise M. Burkhart is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology, University at Albany, SUNY, with a joint appointment in Latin American and Caribbean Studies. She received her Ph.D. in anthropology from Yale University in 1986. Her research deals with the indigenization of Christianity among the Nahuas (Aztecs and related peoples) of central Mexico during the early colonial period. She is the author of The Slippery Earth: Nahua-Christian Moral Dialogue in Sixteenth-Century Mexico (University of Arizona Press, 1989), Holy Wednesday: A Nahua Drama from Early Colonial Mexico (University of Pennsylvania Press, 1996), and other studies of Nahua religion.
