Reuchlin's defense of Jewish learning is to be understood in the larger context of Christian Hebraica and conversion polemic
in late Renaissance and early Reformation Europe. For Reuchlin, the defense
of Hebrew learning served the greater purpose of conversion; but Christian
Kabbalah, Reuchlin's via media of Jewish conversion, ultimately failed due
to the hardening of religious boundaries as a result of the Reformation on
the one hand and the defensive reaction of Jewish rabbis on the other.
