: EN-ROUTE M.A.

Some senior colleges in the City University have agreed to grant a master’s degree to enrolled students who are en-route to the Ph.D.

The general requirements for the en-route M.A. are as follows

1. Successful completion of 45 graduate graded credits (“pass” grades not applicable) with at least a B average.

2. Result of Pass on the First Examination.

3. Completion of a substantial paper written for an advanced course. This includes good
term papers for regular (800-level) courses, seminar papers, and dissertation proposals.

4. Satisfaction of all financial obligations to the University.

Students must abide by the participating CUNY college’s deadline for filing. Specific additional criteria of the participating colleges are:

  • City College: Items 1-4 above. Also, a student must be doing part of his or her work either at City College or with City College professors. City College also requires explicit approval of the college’s Economics Department.
  • Hunter College: Items 1-4 above.
  • Brooklyn College: Items 1-4 above.
  • Queens College: Items 1-4 above
For a student to obtain an en-route M.A., the Economics program and The Graduate Center must certify to the college to which application is made that the student is in good standing and must forward to the college the student’s paper and his or her graduate record. Students who are qualified and wish to receive an en-route master’s degree should contact the Executive Officer or the Assistant Program Officer.
