Course Requirements

effective Fall Term 2004

Students are required to take one course from each of our four areas. Courses can be chosen from those listed for each area. Substitution of any other course requires advanced permission of the EEB Advisory chair or their designee.

Behavior
     animal behavior 2 (72407)
     behavior and evolution (72406)

Ecology
     population ecology (76005)
     ecology (76001)
     community ecology (76003)

Evolution
     population genetics (70901)
     evolution (70503)
     molecular evolution (70803)

Systematics
     principles of systematics (70603)

In addition, students are required to take:

  1. One graduate lecture and lab statistics course. This can be fulfilled with either Biostatistics 1 (78201 - lecture and lab) or Mathematical Biology 1 and 2 (78001 lecture and 78002 lab).

(The eeb advisory can be petitioned to consider an equivalent graduate course taken during the previous 3 years in fulfilling this requirement.)

  2. One 3-credit graduate seminar course (Seminar in Evolution U79001, Seminar in Ecology 79006, Seminar in Biomathematics 79008, Seminar in Systematics 79011, Seminar in Zoogeography 79012, Seminar in Animal Behavior 79022). These seminar courses are offered periodically by different campuses and will focus on critical evaluation of papers in the various areas.
  3. Any student who has not taken a basic genetics course in the past 5 years will be required to take an undergraduate genetics course at one of the campuses.

Any exceptions to these requirements must be approved by the EEB Advisory Committee.

These requirements apply to any student entering the program during or subsequent to the Fall Term 2004.

Note: Students already matriculated in the program may elect to meet these 2004 requirements rather than the ones in force on their date of matriculation by notifying the Chair of the EEB advisory committee.

Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, and Behavior (EEB)

In addition to the regular requirements of the Ph.D. Program in Biology, all EEB students shall meet the following requirements.

1) All Level-1 students shall be required to take at least one course from each of the established core areas. These core courses are designed to service Level-1 students in EEB and have been approved by the EEB Advisory Committee. The four established required core areas are: Ecology, Evolution, Systematics, and Behavior.

2) All students will be required to complete Bio U780.01 and Bio. U780.02 (Mathematical Biology, lecture and laboratory) and U782.01 (Biostatistics). Students may register for these courses with designated faculty members.

EEB Required Curriculum
Students entering 1999-2003

(please note that the course requirements are expected to be met before taking the Second Exam, not the First Exam!)
  1. Must take list:

    2. U790.30 EEB Seminar (1 credit)
    3. 1 course in statistics: Three courses available in CUNY are approved. They are 1. Biostatistics (City), 2. Biomath (Queens) and 3. Biomath (Lehman).
  2. Choice list (Take 1 course each from 4 of the following groups):
    1. Systematics: U706.03, Principles of Systematics or U790.12 Biogeography or *Molecular Evolution
    2. Evolution: U705.03 Evolution or U709.01 Population genetics, or *Molecular Evolution
