CUNY Graduate Center Language
Reading Program
The CUNY Graduate Center Language Reading Program offers intensive,
non-credit courses in fall, spring, and summer designed to assist
graduate students in meeting the language requirements for their
degrees. These courses last for twelve weeks in spring and fall
and six weeks in the summer. They aim at developing a reading
knowledge of the languages. Tuition is $275 for matriculated
students, $500 for others for 48 instructional hours. In the
fall, we offer French, German, and Latin, in the spring, French,
German, Latin, and Spanish. In the summer we offer French, German,
Ancient Greek, Italian, Latin, and Spanish.
During the school year the classes meet twice a week, Mondays
and Thursdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m. In the summer they are held during
the day (either 9:30-12:10, or 1:00-3:40) Mondays, Wednesdays,
and Fridays. French, German, and Latin are also offered MWF 5:30-8:10
p.m.
Level One assumes no knowledge of the language and by the end
of the term people are translating scholarly articles. On the
last day of the term a final exam is given in the student's own
field of interest.
In French and German a level two is given for people who can
translate the language with difficulty and who want to improve
their reading ability. These classes are given spring and fall
Mondays and Thursdays, 4:15-6:15 p.m.
