The Ph.D. Program in English draws on the abundant resources of New York City and CUNY to provide exceptional, varied academic training that both profits from the rich inheritance of literary tradition and contributes to current innovations in a rapidly changing discipline.

In a recent study conducted by Academic Analytics, the Ph.D. Program in English ranked tenth in the country for the scholarly achievement of its faculty, according to a Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index.  Further, in the "broad" category of humanities, the Graduate Center was fourth after Harvard, Yale, and Princeton.  The rankings take into account scholarly publications, honors and awards and grants. The Ph.D. Program in English also ranked first nationally in a 2000 survey of U.S. Doctoral Programs, their educational practices, and student satisfaction.

People & Groups
The Program's faculty is made up of nearly 60 distinguished scholars who have contributed significantly to a wide variety of ields in literary and cultural studies. The Program's area groups and interdisciplinary interest groups coordinate curriculum, colloquia, research activities and opportunities, and sponsor or cosponsor publications. Our almost 300 students come from a variety of educational, professional, and geographic backgrounds, and include accomplished writers, poets, novelists, and playwrights. Our graduates find work at colleges and universities throughout the United States, and internationally. Alumni include many award-winning teachers, active scholars, critics, and writers, academic administratorsm as well as those pursuing successful careers outside the academy.

Research & Grants
Our publications, dissertations, and other research projects are enhanced by The Graduate Center's location at the center of a great city that is unique for its renowned research institutions, rich cultural life, and splendid diversity.

 

Teaching & Courses
Each semester the Program offers approximately 25 seminars in traditional and emerging areas of study. Students in the Ph.D. Program teach throughout the CUNY system, as adjunct faculty and graduate fellows. The Program and CUNY colleges thus provide strong on-the-job training in the teaching of composition and literature.

Prospective Students
Each year, 250-300 applicants compete for the approximately 30 slots for entering students. Financial aid includes an increasing number of five-year packages offering in-state tuition and a combination of stipends and teaching fellowship.

Stages of the Degree
The degree requirements are designed to provide students knowledge in the breadth of the field while encouraging them to develop professional interests and specialties for dissertation-level research.
