Job Placement Information

The results of our placement efforts are heartening and gratifying. Many of our students have a strong desire (or need) to remain in the New York area, and we in fact succeed in placing many students in institutions in and around New York City. But our students have also had increasing success finding tenure-track positions in a wide range of kinds of academic institution across the country.

Recent (2005-2007) graduates of the Ph.D. Program in English have found tenure-track jobs at the following institutions:

Adelphi University
Borough of Manhattan Community College (CUNY)
California Institute of the Arts
The Citadel
Denison University
Dominican College
Eastern Kentucky University
Elms College (Chicopee, Mass.)
Hofstra University
John Jay College (CUNY) (two positions)
Kyung Hee University at Seoul (Korea)
LaGuardia Community College (CUNY)
Millersville College (Pennsylvania)
New York City College of Technology (CUNY) (three positions)
Queens College (CUNY) (two positions in English, one in the Graduate School of Library Science)
Queensborough Community College (CUNY)
Salisbury University (Maryland)
San Jose State University
Sarah Lawrence College
Southern New Hampshire University
St. John Fisher University (Rochester, NY)
SUNY Old Westbury
Syracuse University
University of California/Berkeley
University of Evansville (Indiana)
University of Houston/Downtown
University of Southern Mississippi
University of Wisconsin at Stout
Wichita State University

In addition, several recent graduates had already begun tenure-track work before graduation; they continue in positions at Oregon Institute of Technology; Principia College; Queensborough Community College; SUNY Old Westbury; Westchester Community College; and William Paterson University. Pre-2005 graduates have also found tenure-track work within the last two years at Bronx Community College (CUNY) and Rutgers University (New Brunswick).

2005-2007 graduates also took up or continued full-time, non-tenure track positions at Gustavus Adolphus College, New Jersey City University (two positions), New York University, Princeton University, Rutgers University, and Suffolk University. Others took up post-doctoral positions at UCLA (two years) and USC (one year).

Assessing placement rates is difficult, since the general pattern for our graduates seems to be (often) continuing part-time teaching for some time after graduation, moving then into full-time but non-tenure track positions, and then finding tenure-track work only two or three or four years post-graduation. We therefore get the best sense of overall placement success from the five-year alumni survey the Graduate Center constructs each year.

In the survey of 1998-99 graduates: 68.8% of the alumni responded to the survey. Of those responding, 81.8% were employed full-time in education; 9.1% were employed in the nonprofit sector; 9.1% reported no employer. Alumni held tenure-track jobs at Kingsborough Community College, Lehman College (CUNY), Mt. St. Mary College, Nassau Community College, New Jersey City University, New York City College of Technology (CUNY), Queen’s University (Ontario, Canada), and Rider University. One alumnus held an administrative position at City College.

In the survey of 1999-2000 graduates: 91.3% of the alumni responded to the survey. Of those responding, 85.7% were employed full-time in education; 9.5% were employed in the nonprofit sector; 4.8% were employed in business/industry. Alumni from this year held tenure-track jobs at Borough of Manhattan Community College, The College of Staten Island, Eastern New Mexico University, Hunter College High School, John Jay College, Kingsborough Community College, Ocean County College, Queens College, Stern College/Yeshiva University, SUNY Old Westbury, University of New Hampshire, Westchester Community College, and West Virginia University. Others held non-tenure track administrative positions at CUNY and LaGuardia Community College. Full-time, non-tenure track teaching positions were held at Stern College and New York Law School. Those in the non-profit sector worked at the National Development and Research Institute (NDRI) and the American Foundation for AIDS Research.

In the survey of 2000-2001 graduates, 88.9% of the alumni responded to the survey. Of those responding, 86.7% were employed full-time (check?) in education; 13.3% were employed in business/industry; 6.7% (one respondent) indicated no current employment. Alumni held tenure-track jobs at Queensborough Community College, Central Connecticut State University, Hunter College, Borough of Manhattan Community College (?), John Jay College, Curry College, Seton Hall University, [additional info?]. Others held a non-tenure track administrative position at Brooklyn College (Director of the Learning Center), and a part-time (adjunct) teaching position at Hunter College.
