Framed: Delimiting the Film Image
A CUNY Graduate Center interdisciplinary conference
Sponsored by the Cinema Studies Group
April 10-11, 2008
Deadline for abstracts: January 15, 2008

"Framed" is an interdisciplinary graduate conference organized and sponsored by the Cinema Studies Group of CUNY Graduate Center in New York City. This conference seeks to investigate the diverse ways in which film images are framed--both literally (by the camera lens, by the director) and figuratively (by critics, by academic discourse, by popular culture).

We invite proposals for 15-20 minute presentations that engage with these cinematic issues. Particular consideration will be given to panel submissions.

Possible topics might include (but are not limited to):
  • Absences and exclusions
  • Analysis of a single director and/or single film
  • "Auteurs" and "cult" directors
  • Awards, prizes, and festivals
  • Canons/canon formation
  • Cinematic collectives/manifestos: Left Bank, Dogme 95, Neorealism
  • Distribution: theatrical, YouTube, iPods, digital streaming, digital exhibition
  • Genre: conventions, revisions, hybrids
  • Minority subjectivities: gender, race, sexuality, postcolonialism
  • "Movies" versus "films"
  • The national, the transnational, and the global
  • Off-screen space: fourth walls, fields of vision, credit sequences, diegetic and nondiegetic sound
  • "Other" media: television, music videos, web films
  • Periodization of film history courses: how and where do we divide it?
  • The place of film studies in the academy
  • Syntax: Hollywood, independent, avant-garde
  • Technologies: celluloid, high definition, digital cinematography, nonlinear editing (FinalCut Pro, etc.)

    Submit 300-word abstracts by January 15, 2008 to Elizabeth Alsop and Kelley Kawano at gccinemastudies@gmail.com.
