CONCERTINA

 

1. Primary documents (copies)

— Reproductions of five of the nineteenth-century Wheatstone & Co. sales ledgers/account books that are currently part of the Wayne Collection at The Horniman Museum, London:

  • C 1046.....sales ledger, 1839-1848 (instruments with serial numbers 1 - 1500)
  • C 1050.....sales ledger, 5 April 1856 - 4 November 1857 (nos. 8,000 - 10,000)
  • C 1052.....sales ledger, 21 October 1859 - 30 April 1864 (nos. 11,000 -12,000)
  • C 1054.....sales ledger, 1 March 1866 - 22 December 1891 (nos. 18061 - 21353) (this ledger in order of serial numbers, but without names of purchasers)
  • C 1056.....a ledger if weekly payments to employees, suppliers, etc., from 1 January 1848 to 30 June 1849

— Bill of sale, 3 October 1895: Mr. Bevington purchases an Anglo concertina (Lachenal) from Henshaw & Loebell, Manchester, for ?6.5.0; note on bill reads: "Special Concertina, made as per instructions[,] extra reed carriage[,] diagram catalogue enclosed with instrument"-- Bevington's address given as "25 Toronta Arcade Toronta"

— "Price List of 'Wheatstone' English Concertinas and AEolas": no date, but reference to such performers as "G. Matusewitz (USA)" and The Fayre Four, combined with other features, place it in the 1920s

Cawdell, William. A Short Account of the English Concertina (London: Cawdell, 1865)--an early "history" of the instrument.

Ewer, John J. Catalogue of Ewer & Co's Universal Circulating Music Library (London: Ewer, 1860)--Pt. II/Sections XXXIV-XXXVII/Nos. 31395-31842, with catalogue of music for concertina.

Wheatstone & Co. Catalogue (London: Wheatstone, c. 1900)--a turn-of-the-century catalogue of the company's publications for concertina.

Wheatstone, Charles. Patent No. 5803 (1829): "A Certain Improvement or Certain Improvements in the Construction of Wind Musical Instruments"--deals with symphonium and concertina.

Wheatstone, Charles. Patent No. 10,041 (1844): "Improvements on the Concertina and other Musical Instruments, in which the Sounds are Produced by the Action of Wind on Vibrating Springs."

Wheatstone, William, Patent No. 2289 (1861): "Improvements in Concertinas and other Musical Instruments, the Tones of which are Produced from the Vibrations of Springs."

Alsepti, [James] and Richard Ballinger, Patent No. 8290 (1885):  "Improvements in Concertinas" -- this is the patent for the so-called "bowing valves."
