New York / Paris Exchange Program

The City University of New York & The Universities of Paris

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The New York/Paris Exchange Program offers all full-time CUNY students of all disciplines (undergraduates and graduates) the unique opportunity to study at one of the Universities of Paris for one or two semesters.

Students are placed at the various participating French Universities based on their proficiency in French, their area of specialization, and their class standing. Credits earned for courses taken abroad are applicable toward the CUNY degree.

Among the disciplines offered at Paris Universities are the following: art and art history; business and management; cinema and theatre; computer science; economics; engineering and technology; history; linguistics, literature, and translation; political science; psychology; sociology; urban studies; and women's studies.

PARTICIPATING PARIS UNIVERSITIES

REQUIREMENTS

Students who apply should have the following: a 2.75 average, three semesters of college French (or an equivalent proficiency), a spirit of adventure, and a strong desire to participate. Students should also be in good standing at their home college.

COSTS

Those enrolled in the program will still be classified as CUNY students. Before leaving for Paris, students will register at their home college for 12 blanket credits and will pay regular CUNY tuition. No additional tuition fees will be charged by the participating French universities.

Those eligible for tuition assistance in the form of TAP, PELL, and BEOG grants (or the Guaranteed Student Loan) will continue to receive this aid.

Applicants must provide a notarized letter from either a bank official or supporting person stating that the student will have $750 per month available to cover living expenses. In addition, a $50 administrative fee will be charged to students when they are accepted.

LODGINGS

The program helps participants find accommodations in rooms and dormitories located throughout Paris. Housing costs range from $350 to $425 per month.

SEMESTER CALENDAR

Since the academic calendars of CUNY and Paris Universities do not precisely coincide, students planning to join the exchange for one semester only are urged to apply for the spring term. Those who attend fall classes are expected to be in Paris by September 1st; those participating only in the spring should arrive in Paris by February 1st.

CUNY STAFF

A CUNY professor serves each year as Resident Director of the program and helps students find accommodations and register for courses in Paris.

A program coordinator and a program representative at each of the participating CUNY campuses in New York are also available.  Dr. Maxine Fisher is the NY-based director of the Paris-CUNY exchange program.  E-mail: Maxine_Fisher@qc.edu.
