Machado 21: A Centennial Celebration

When Machado de Assis died in September 29th, 1908 in Rio de Janeiro – a town he never left – he was an acclaimed writer. Being at that time the first president of the Brazilian Academy of Letters since its initiation, in 1897, Machado left nine novels, some of them considered masterpieces of the Portuguese language. Machado de Assis was also a poet, a playwright, a journalist and the translator of many French and English classics including the works of Flaubert and Shakespeare. Worldwide there are literary critics dedicated to studying his work. They emphasize the unique character of his writing, which went beyond the literary models of his day and truly crossed local borders in dealing with universal themes. Harold Bloom has called him one of the 100 geniuses of literature and placed him alongside writers such as Dante, Shakespeare and Cervantes. Michael Wood affirms that Machado was undoubtedly a “master”.

This Fall 2008 semester The Ph.D. Program in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Literatures and Languages and The Luso-Brazilian Studies Group will be holding a series of activities in homage to this important Brazilian writer, together with The Americas Society, The Brazilian Consulate in New York, The Lincoln Center, The Brazilian Endowment for the Arts, Academia Brasileira de Letras and Yale University. Professor Marlene Gottlieb Honored by the NYSAFLT

The New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers selected Professor Marlene Gottlieb, who is also Dean of Arts and Humanities at Lehman College, as the recipient of the 2003 Ruth E. A summa cum laude graduate of Hunter College, Dean Gottlieb earned her master's and doctoral degrees at Columbia University, where she received the Angel del Río Prize for Best Master's Essay in Spanish, and has been a member of the Lehman faculty since 1967. Following a seven-year tenure as Chair of Lehman's Department of Languages and Literatures, she was appointed as Dean in 1997. For the past several years, she has served the New York City community by providing translations of forms, informational brochures and other materials for various metropolitan hospitals. In addition to her work at Lehman, she teaches at the CUNY Graduate Center in both the doctoral program in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Literatures and the master's program in Liberal Studies/Translation.

NYSAFLT has administered the award since 1969 in honor of Professor Wasley's dedication to her profession and her students. The organization promotes the study of languages and culture and encourages articulation at all levels of instruction.
