Description:

The Director of Finance and Administration serves as the chief officer of the Graduate School of Journalism for budget and finance, human relations, facilities management, procurement, and security. The Director is responsible for all aspects of financial planning, budgeting and reporting for the School. S/he also oversees such administrative areas as business policies and procedures, accounting, purchasing, procurement, property management and financial reporting. The Director leads a staff of six and works closely with the Dean, Associate Dean and all members of the senior management team. This is a “big picture, small picture” position - the Director must make complex decisions and exercise leadership responsibilities on a daily basis, even while overseeing a range of administrative detail.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Planning and achieving strategic financial and performance goals and objectives, and prioritizing them consistent with the school's mission and vision. 
    • Serving as the School's primary risk management officer, internal control officer, and business continuity officer.
    • Serving as chief liaison with internal and external auditors.
    • Developing and implementing policies, procedures, and practices pertaining to all financial and administrative matters affecting the School.
    • Serving as the chief liaison with vendors and service providers.
    • Deploying resources in pursuit of maximum competitive advantage.
    • Incorporating automated processes to promote efficiency and effectiveness. 
    • Serving as the chief procurement officer for all goods and services.
    • Serving as an integral part of the senior management team and decision-making process.
    • Ensuring compliance with a broad range of University-wide policies and procedures.
    • Collaborating with University-wide staff to identify opportunities for process improvements.
    • Managing all security personnel.
    • Managing maintenance personnel and the School’s maintenance contract with its landlord.
    • Serving as the School’s primary health and safety officer.
    • Negotiating space rental agreements and setting up a financial structure for a continuing and professional education program at the School.
    • Overseeing administrative staff.
    • Interfacing with construction staff and vendors as construction issues are ironed out.
    • Implementing and managing financial aspects related to CUNYfirst.
    • Working with the CUNY Research Foundation to administer faculty/school grants.
    • Performing other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a baccalaureate degree, a minimum of eight years of experience in senior managerial and administrative positions, and a clear track record of successful performance. An MBA or CPA license is preferred. We are looking for an action-oriented individual who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment, thinks like an entrepreneur, and is enthusiastic about working in public higher education. S/he must be accustomed to working in a collaborative environment, possess excellent oral and written skills, be accomplished in analyzing and resolving problems, and identifying and seizing opportunities.

Salary Range: Commensurate with education and experience

FLSA Status: Exempt
