The IJMES editorial office welcomes submissions of full-length scholarly articles. Please review the following four documents before submitting an article to IJMES. Submissions not conforming to IJMES guidelines may be returned.
- Our General Submission Information (on this page below)
- Our Instructions to Contributors document (PDF), which contains detailed submission information as well as IJMES style, transliteration, and endnotes guidelines
- The IJMES Peer Review Questions (which we send to all of our peer reviewers), to get a sense of what we are looking for in an article
- The IJMES Transliteration Guide and Chart, if your article contains words from non-Latin scripts.
For additional submission resources (e.g., transliteration fonts), see our Author Resources page.
General Submission Information
NEW: IJMES has moved to online submissions. All articles should now be uploaded as MS Word documents through our ScholarOne system.
Note: You may already have an account in ScholarOne if you were in our pre-existing database of Middle East scholars. To find out, enter your email address in the "Password Help" box. If you get a
message that the system was unable to find your email address, then create a new account using the "Register here" button. One you have created an account, click
on the "Author/Book Reviewer Center" link. From that page you can submit a new manuscript.
The ScholarOne system can be accessed here.
Submitted articles should be between 7,000-10,000 words and should not exceed 35 double-spaced pages (including text, notes, and figures). IJMES editorial policy requires that articles be based on original research and the careful analysis of archival and other primary-source materials. IJMES evaluates manuscripts with the understanding that they have not been published elsewhere in any language and are not under consideration for publication elsewhere.
All submissions must include a 150-word abstract at the start of the article.
Within two weeks of receipt, IJMES sends authors either an official confirmation email or a notification that the submission does not conform to IJMES guidelines. If you do not hear from us within two weeks of submitting an article, please inquire. Submitted manuscripts that conform to IJMES guidelines are evaluated by the editorial office, usually within 4-8 weeks of receipt. Those that show the greatest promise of being published in IJMES are then submitted to several anonymous reviewers who specialize in the area(s) most relevant to the manuscript. The first round of peer review is typically completed 3-6 months from the date of submission. In most cases, even articles recommended for publication are subject to a revision process, a second round of peer review, and several rounds of editing after acceptance. Total time from submission to print is usually 12-18 months.
IJMES focuses on the area encompassing the Arab world, Iran, Turkey, the Caucasus, Afghanistan, Israel, Transoxiana, and Muslim South Asia from the seventh century to the present. Articles on communities or politics in other regions of the world that had or have strong Middle Eastern ties or contexts, or on relations between those regions and the Middle East, will also be considered. Particular attention will be paid to works dealing with history, anthropology, sociology, political science, economics, literature, art and architecture, religion, and law. Because of its interdisciplinary nature, IJMES does not accept technical or highly specialized material, nor does it publish in the areas of administration or training. Please look at articles in recent issues for an idea of what we publish.
