Peter Manuel has researched and published extensively on musics of the Hispanic Caribbean and Spain (as well as India and Indo-Caribbean culture). His books include Caribbean Currents: Caribbean Music from Rumba to Reggae (with M. Largey and K. Bilby, 1996, 2nd edition 2006), which won the Caribbean Studies Association 1996 Gordon K. Lewis Best Book Award, and two edited volumes: Essays on Cuban Music: North American and Cuban Perspectives (1991), and Creolizing Contradance in the Caribbean (forthcoming 2009). He regularly teaches seminars on Caribbean music at the Graduate Center in addition to his undergraduate courses at John Jay College.
