The CUNY Graduate Center Language Reading Program exists to help graduate students meet their foreign language requirement by offering non-credit courses for reading knowledge only. In these courses no emphasis is placed on speaking the language or on aural comprehension; the grammar is taught quickly and then material is given to be translated. By the end of the term, students are translating scholarly articles in their own field of interest and on the last day of the term, an examination is given in the students' own field of interest.
Level One: assumes no knowledge of the language at all.
Level Two (available only in French and German): is for students who can translate the language (with difficulty) but need more practice to translate accurately. In these courses, there is a fast review of grammar.
Since classes move quickly, the student should be prepared to spend as much time doing the homework for the language courses as he/she would spend for a graduate course.
Tuition: There are separate tuitions for students currently matriculated in a credit-bearing degree program at any college of the City University of New York and for those who are not.
Tuition for students currently matriculated in a credit-bearing degree program at any college of CUNY (a copy of the paid bursar's bill or a letter stating that the student is matriculated must be presented) is $275.
Tuition for those not currently matriculated in a credit-bearing degree program at any college of CUNY is $795.
