Students are required to write two thesis papers (circa 25-35 pages) that meet rigorous standards of research and scholarship. Students can use diverse and easily accessible New York-based primary sources for studying the Middle East or its diaspora, conduct a study of an immigrant/ethnic community, or arrange similar such projects with the approval of an advisor . Paper topics may grow out of regular coursework. In their final semester, students sign up for a 3-credit thesis writing course with their advisor to revise or draft papers. All thesis papers must be approved by the primary advisor and a second reader.
