Each fall, beginning in 2003, the Center has devoted several days to celebrating the best of the new and unconventional being created that season by New York City's theatre artists and companies. In a city that overflows with the performing arts, the new and the different can sometimes disappear in the strong current of the mainstream. With each Prelude­—a festival of over twenty workshops, discussions, open rehearsals, and performances—the Center provides a unique forum for New York artists to learn from each other, and for students, scholars, and potential audiences to learn about the upcoming year's offerings. As with all Center programs, the admission is free of charge and on a first come, first served basis. Prelude is generously sponsored by the Lucille Lortel Foundation.
